Each year the DMYF sponsors the Dick Melloni Invitational Golf Tournament at Little Harbor Country Club in Wareham, MA. This Tournament was started by Dick in 1987 to raise funds for scholarships for children of area Firefighters and emergency services personnel through the Wareham Firemen’s Association Scholarship fund. Each year, as from the beginning, two-to-four students are chosen for college or trade-school scholarships based on strict academic and community service requirements.
The golf tournament was renamed for Dick after his passing in 1993. Since its association with the tournament, the DMYF has endeavored to expand the charitable outreach of this great event. As a direct result, the DMYF has been able to increase and diversify the scholarships awarded to area students, establish itself as a major donor for the Southcoast YMCA and Tobey Hospital, and provide financial support for youth programs throughout Southeastern Massachusetts.
Each year greater than 100 golfers participate in this great event. This year was a banner year for our tournament as 125 golfers coursed the links in competition for the always sought-after first through third place prizes. As tradition at our tournament, several of our generous sponsors were awarded a Plaque of Appreciation for their efforts on our behalf. This year the awards went to Bobby Hunter, Merry Holway, and Barry Cattabriga - three members of the golf committee. Each of these individuals have supported this tournament from its inception in 1987 and continue to support other Dick Melloni Youth Foundation sponsored events and fund-raisers.
